Setting The Stage
The always-ambitious Cirque du Soleil seized the moment at this week’s Tianguis Turistico Mexico trade conference in Guadalajara to announce a new mega project for Mexico.
Cirque du Soleil already has a successful permanent theatre in the Riviera Maya, where the show “Joya” operates.
At Tianguis, Cirque CEO Daniel Lamarre announced that a theme park focused on a new theatre in Nuevo Vallarta was now in the works. Ground has broken on the theme park and it is estimated to open in 2018.
The new show to be presented there will be called “Luzia” and it will adhere to the typically lofty entertainment standards that are expected of Cirque, said Lamarre.
“Luzia” will be subtitled “A Waking Dream of Mexico” and it will be an “amazing artistic adventure” that will bring to life “rich, poetic themes of the culture of Mexico,” said the Cirque CEO.
But before it opens in Nuevo Vallarta, “Luzia” will be given a full schedule of travelling theatre shows, first in Canada, starting in Montreal (next week) and then Toronto.
Big tent presentations of Luzia will follow in cities around the world before it debuts at its new permanent home in Mexico.
Lamarre says he considers himself an ambassador of Mexican culture and points out that the 18-month run of Luzia shows around the world will generate a ground swell of interest in the theme park in Nuevo Vallarta.
A target of 5 million visitors in the goal, said the CEO.
