VIDEO REPORT: American Eagle soars from Waterloo

The Region of Waterloo International Airport became a lot more “international” when American Airlines’ regional affiliate, American Eagle launched twice daily non-stop jet service to its hub at Chicago O’Hare last week (June 14). The airport serves the Kitchener-Waterloo-Cambridge-Guelph area — often referred to as the Canada Technology Triangle — and is becoming a more attractive alternative for air travellers from and to the local communities who can avoid the hassle, additional cost and extra time of using Pearson International Airport about 90 kilometres to the east, near Toronto. American Eagle’s service is a significant addition to the travel options offered via Waterloo Airport (YKF), as it connects the region not only to a significant US business and leisure destination, but also provides worldwide connections via American Airlines’ hub at O’Hare (ORD). The air service is operated with 50-seat Embraer ERJ-145 regional jet aircraft. As well, the new flights add to the growing connections the airport offers via several airlines operating through YKF, including WestJet’s daily Calgary non-stops with Boeing 737 aircraft and Bearskin Airlines with flights to Ottawa and Montreal using 19-seat Metro turboprop commuter airliners. During the winter season, charter flights are offered to sun destinations. Furthermore, the airport handles a growing number of corporate business jets.
